Residencies

Each year Coppermoss invites applications for residencies and retreats at the cottage in Tuwanek, BC. Residencies normally run from November 1 – May 15 of each year, and are generally 1-2 weeks in length, although you may choose to apply for longer. The residencies take place in Coppermoss Treetop Cottage, and are limited to a maximum of 4 people. Because the cottage has 110 stairs, we are unable to support requests from individuals who have mobility challenges. We seek to support as many applications as possible, and ask you to consider our values and approach before applying. We are driven by a commitment to imagining a decolonial future, and encourage applications from individuals/collectives and groups who consider making through responsible action and radical thinking. We support retreats and residencies that enact the locality of the cottage as a means of considering broader restorative relationships with land, environment and communities.

We offer two ways for you to apply:

  1. Retreat: We support your need to retreat into solitude and silence at Coppermoss in order to complete a project you may be in the midst of; or to go deeper into ideas you have just kept putting away. In this category, you are able to select the option of coming for 1-4 weeks to spend focused and committed time towards the completion of a project. We support individuals/collectives/groups who see their projects and practices connecting with the values and mission of Coppermoss.

  2. Residency: We invite applications from individuals/collectives/groups who are interested in a longer and more sustained relationship with Coppermoss and the ideas we are committed to. Whether you already have a project in development that connects, or you are interested in researching and exploring potential projects, this category would be ideal for you. Residencies are 1-2 weeks in length, and are intended to repeat over the course of time, depending on the nature of the research and work. This option may result in the development of new work, new research, new skills or a new project. If selected, Coppermoss will commit to collaboratively supporting you, both through returning and hosted visits, but also through financial support. Once here you will be introduced through hikes, guided tours, walks and introductions to local contacts, to the specific geography and cultural history of this place. We ask you to describe in detail how you see connecting with this intent.

Location/Transportation: Coppermoss is located 12kms from the closest grocery stores, and other than one taxi servicing the entire town of Sechelt, there is no public transportation to and from the cottage, so please factor this in. . We strongly encourage you to have a means of transportation, preferably a car during the winter months. People have been known to cycle out to us, but be aware the road is long and hilly. If you do not have a car, we are able to pick you up at the bus stop in Sechelt, and drop you back there on your last day. A taxi costs $40 from Sechelt to Tuwanek. From Sechelt there is a bus that takes you to the Langdale Ferry Terminal.
